In late 2022 my husband decided to purchase a sawmill. In this post learn why we purchased a mill, the history of our mill, projects we have used the mill for and the hopes for the future of the mill. 2022 brought big changes on our homestead and prepared us with material needed for 2023.

It all started with a slab of walnut a friend of ours gave us through a barter trade. I loved the wood and could envision a coffee table made from it. We let the wood dry naturally for about two years before turning it into a coffee table with an epoxy river pour. While creating this table his love for wood working and epoxy grew. He wanted to grow in wood and epoxy working and share his love and new skills with others. From there the idea of having a sawmill excited him. He would be able to use material on the homestead and he could mill the wood to his specifications.

The search began. It took a couple of months or so to find a good sawmill in our budget, but with God's blessing it took shape. You see the sawmill was actually located at a church youth camp. In order to save money, the church used the mill to process logs and previously logged timbers that was donated to the church. The boards were used to add building and remodel some existing building at the church. After completing their projects, the church felt it had no need for the mill any longer, so the put it up for sale. It was from their God blessed us with the ability to purchase this sawmill.

Since getting the sawmill setup on our property it has been quite busy and our hope for the future is it continues to remain busy. My husband has used the mill to make post for our new goat barns, as well as board for the stall walls. It has milled boards to cover closets with cedar. It has made countless small projects for our children to learn new skills and practice some old ones. It has made coffee tables and other furniture items. In the future he hopes to sale some of his work and bring some extra income into the homestead.
The sawmill has been a great addition to our homestead. The mill had a unique start on the homestead, a unique history, and hopefully it will become and amazing assesset to our homestead. Be sure to follow us on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or all three to get the latest on Homestead Raising.
